Brisbane Floods Disaster

No matter where you are in the world, I’m sure you’ve heard about the awful disaster that befell residents of Northern Australia this January, 2011.

With little warning, Queensland rivers burst their banks as torrential rain lashed down to a far worse degree than had ever been seen before.

Not since 1974 had residents of this part of Australia seen Nature act with such unrelenting force.

Many people watched helplessly as their homes were literally washed away before their very eyes.

Lives were lost along with thousands of homes and lifetimes of possessions.

The Emergency Services of both Queensland and Victoria are to be congratulated for their heroic and conscientious efforts as they put into effect the kind of disaster contingency plans for which they train but hope never to have to enact.

Communities rallied around Australia and aid and support is being volunteered by friends and strangers alike.

I can handle it!

I was glancing back through another great book I read a while ago by Susan Jeffers, called “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”.

Susan reminded me again that we are all faced with hurdles that sometimes seem insurmountable, whether it’s a job loss, relationship break up, bereavement of a friend or family member, an illness or simply a failure to achieve something that is important to us.

It’s important to remember that is the way we deal with these ‘problems’ that defines us.

Our true character is revealed when we bounce back from adversity and draw on our inner courage.

Tony’s Viewpoint: I have learned and experienced many times in my life that things which can seem at the time to be a disaster, or a major problem, were in fact a challenge that would help me to grow or the seed of an even greater opportunity.

With hindsight we can look back and say “If that seemingly bad thing hadn’t happened, then this good thing might not have happened instead”.

That can be a very comforting thing of which to remind yourself when you are having what may seem like a bad day.

A goal is more than a dream; it’s a dream being acted upon.

goal-settingNow that the turkey’s been gobbled, the mince pies dispensed and the Christmas decorations packed away for another year, I wonder how we’re all going with those New Year Resolutions?

If you’re finding yourself struggling already with ‘that thing’ and we’ve only just started the New Year, don’t despair, there’s good news – “Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life!”

There’s no point worrying about what you intended to do yesterday, but didn’t do, for whatever reason. Yesterday is gone. The present is here right now.

Go on - a little bit won't hurt you!

Life doesn’t always go as planned – sometimes a road block means you have to drive down a detour to end up where you wanted to be.

Isn’t it always the case that when you start a diet, someone insists you eat a piece of chocolate cake and you don’t want to offend them?

Never mind – start again! This time – write it down and make it ‘real’.

Don’t let a small slip throw you off the path to success!

Professor Schwartz was considered a leading American authority on the topics of motivation and leadership.

He was a big dreamer, a big thinker and a big doer. His books have influenced thousands of people to be successful at whatever is their chosen path.

Start with small steps – “A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step” and keep going.

Have a clear picture of where you are heading and you’ll undoubtedly find the obstacles easier to overcome.

Know what it is that you don’t want, eg maybe you don’t want to smoke anymore, but keep clearly in your mind’s eye what you do want, eg the healthier body you will have because you no longer smoke.

The positive thing toward which you are progressing is always the more important because the sub-conscious mind can’t tell the difference between negative and positive.

In the ‘giving up smoking’ example, it’s more important to think about the healthy body you will gain and plan what other rewards you can have with the money you will have saved by not smoking, than it is to focus on the negative of ‘giving up’ something you have previously found enjoyable.

That positive focus is what can carry you through the ‘weak moments’ when the cravings for the old, unwanted habit occur.

So write down those goals, look at them daily and take action now!

Work On Your Paradigms!

So what is a paradigm you ask?

A paradigm is: A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.

Having really enjoyed the following book myself, I was impressed with the way Wikpedia summarises Dr Covey’s philosophy:

‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, Covey’s best-known book, has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1989. (The audio version became the first non-fiction audio-book in U.S. publishing history to sell more than one million copies.)

Covey argues against what he calls “The Personality Ethic”, something he sees as prevalent in many modern self-help books. He instead promotes what he labels “The Character Ethic”: aligning one’s values with so-called “universal and timeless” principles.

Covey adamantly refuses to conflate principles and values; he sees principles as external natural laws, while values remain internal and subjective.

Covey proclaims that values govern people’s behavior, but principles ultimately determine the consequences. Covey presents his teachings in a series of habits, manifesting as a progression from dependence via independence to interdependence.

Tony’s View: Unqualified as I may be to comment on the philosophies of a Harvard MBA and world authority on Personal and Managerial Effectiveness, I would simply challenge you, the reader to reflect on what you stand for.

  • How do you want to manage your life?
  • Which values are part of your personal belief system?

Reflecting on some of those issues may well help you to shape your own destiny because when you understand which beliefs drive you, it will help you figure out the kind of life you want and how you will get there.

Sometimes too, our beliefs may have been formed on incorrect information and they may well be the ones that can hold you back from achieving your goals in life.

thai-beachThese topics merit far more elaboration than is intended in today’s post, so for now I will merely comment on one of my core-beliefs – the importance of work/life balance.

Taking time out for yourself  (‘me time’) and allocating time for family and friends is vitally important in today’s hectic world.

One of the greatest ways of combining those needs is to take a family vacation to new and exciting places.

Happy New Year! Time for some Resolutions or Changes?

Welcome to 2011

Happy New Year 2011

Firstly, let me wish you the best year of your life so far, along with a few comments about the ‘challenges’ ahead.

Heraclitus of Ephesus (c.535BC – 475 BC) espoused the theory that:

“Everything flows, nothing stands still.”

In our hectic world where change is the only constant, it is important that we seek out and embrace change as a positive thing, when it is sometimes easy to fall into the trap of being fearful about what might go wrong.

Think back to ‘that person’ you were and ‘where’ you were a year ago, or five years ago, and you will realise that you have changed. It is inevitable because we constantly face new obstacles and we are constantly offered new opportunities. In many cases the opportunities appear, disguised as obstacles or problems.

Dream, Believe, AchieveThe crucial thing is to create some time and space to think and to plan. Dream about the things you want to attract into your life and don’t forget to dream ‘big’ because dreams have no limits. The only limits we really have are the ones we place on ourself as a result of our own conditioning.

Figure out what it is that you need to do, figure out how you will become the person you need to be in order to have the things that you want and you can make them happen.


Write down your goals

Most important then is to write them down – the act of writing the goals and putting a date by which you will achieve them helps you to make them real and credible to your conscious mind. Break the goals down into manageable chunks and think of some small rewards you can give yourself as you hit the progress targets. Read them out loud to yourself regularly – psychological research has proven that this makes your mind begin to believe that you can do it.

Here’s an example: A friend of mine wants to lose 15 kilos in weight – a daunting task and one with which many people in the Western World will start their New Year. Focussing on losing a kilo a week is far more likely to be achieved, perhaps rewarding yourself with a candy bar when you have lost 3 kilos, or waiting until the weekend to have one as a small reward.

size 10She has a longer term picture of fitting into a certain dress size by a certain date, so the big picture is there for her to repeatedly visualise. Another crucial element though is emotion, because how we feel is a fickle thing.

By focussing on just how great she will feel when she is wearing her small dress, how sexy she will look and how much more confident she will be, these emotions will help her to conquer those days when the spirit may be willing but the conscious will is weak.

Knowing and constantly reminding yourself why you want to achieve these goals is the thing that will make you or break you.

i_can_because_i_think_i_canIt’s never too late or too early, you’re never too old or too young, too bright or too stupid, to go after the things you want for your life and to make them happen.

If you set a goal for this Year, in a year’s time you will still be a year older, whether you did achieve the goal or whether you didn’t.

So, let’s make this the New Year that will shape the most exciting year of your life so far!

Of course, one of the things I believe can help you immensely is to take a vacation, go somewhere on your ‘bucket list’ – a list of places to see and things to do before you ‘kick the bucket’ (die).
